Notice to Our Customers:

There has been a slight change in what we are doing to correct one issue that has resulted in another. With that said, at no time was the water unsafe or exceeded any Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) promulgated by the U.S.E.P.A.

We started adding sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda) to increase the pH because of the blue staining complaints we have received this summer. The blue staining is the result of very soft water that is corrosive. The water leaving the treatment plant has a hardness of less than 100 mg/L which results in leaching of the copper from some of the brass fixtures in various houses. Raising the pH will drastically reduce and/or eliminate the staining. During this initial “break-in” period the sodium hydroxide raised the pH higher than we wanted. This is what causes the consumer to feel that it is hard to rinse the water off dishes, clothes, bodies, etc. We have reduced the amount of sodium hydroxide being added to the water so that the pH is at the optimal level of 8.2. Since there is quite a bit of storage versus usage, the consumer won’t see the results for a couple of days. We ask for your patience as we work our way through this process.
